한국전통문화대학교는 「이집트 룩소르 지속가능한 문화유산 관광자원 개발 역량강화」 국제협력개발(ODA) 사업의 일환으로 라메세움(Ramesseum) 신전 탑문 복원을 위한 가설덧집 구축 공사를 완료하고 9월 3일 오전 9시(현지 시간)에 준공식을 개최하였다.
라메세움은 고대 이집트 제19왕조 파라오 람세스 2세(재위 약 BC 1279–1213)의 장제신전(葬祭神殿)으로, 유네스코 세계유산 ‘고대 테베와 네크로폴리스(Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis)’를 구성하는 핵심 유적이다. 그러나 장기간에 걸친 자연풍화와 큰 일교차, 지진 위험 등으로 인해 유적의 구조적 안정성 확보와 보존환경 개선이 지속적인 과제로 제기되어 왔다.
이에 국가유산청과 전통문화대는 이집트 유물최고위원회(Supreme Council of Antiquities, 이하 ‘SCA’, 사무총장 히샴 엘레이시)와 함께 2023년부터 5년 계획으로 라메세움 신전 탑문을 해체･복원하기 위한 국제개발협력 사업을 추진해 왔다. 발굴 및 부재조사 과정에서 람세스 2세의 카르투슈와 영토 확장 범위를 입증하는 새로운 지명이 새겨진 부재를 확인하는 등의 성과를 거두었으며 이번에 본격적인 해체·복원 공사를 위해서 유적 현장에 가설덧집을 설치한 것이다.
가설덧집은 가로 42m, 세로 26m, 연면적 1,092㎡, 기둥높이 21m의 규모이며 현지 기후, 유적 경관, 입지 여건 등을 종합적으로 고려하여 설치되었다. 문화유산의 복원을 위해 이와 같은 대규모 가설 보호시설을 설치한 것은 이집트 현지에서 최초 시도되는 사례로, 한국의 우수한 문화유산 보존·관리 기술과 경험이 적용되었다는 점에서 중요한 의의가 있다.
준공식에는 이길배 국가유산청 유산정책국장, 히샴 엘레이시 SCA 사무총장, 김완중 주이집트대한민국대사, 이기성 한국전통문화대학교 사업단장, 한욱 책임교수, 현지 전문가 및 사업 관계자 등 100여 명이 참석하였다. 이길배 유산정책국장은 준공식 후 히샴 엘레이시 SCA 사무총장과 면담을 갖고 라메세움 신전 탑문 복원 사업의 성과를 공유하는 한편, 향후 한-이집트 양국이 문화유산 분야에서 더 긴밀히 협력해 나가기로 뜻을 모았다.
이집트는 1950년대에 아스완 하이댐 건설로 수몰 위기에 처한 아부심벨 신전 등 누비아 유적을 구하기 위해 국제적인 노력이 모이며 세계유산협약 탄생의 계기가 된 국가이다. 참고로, 지난 7월 대한민국 최초로 부산에서 열린 제48차 세계유산위원회에서는 세계유산 보호를 위한 전략적 가치로 협력(Collaboration)을 제시하는 ‘부산 선언’을 채택한 바 있다.
국가유산청과 전통문화대는 오는 2027년까지 탑문 해체 작업과 함께 부재 기록화, 석재 보존처리 등을 진행할 계획이다. 아울러, 이집트 측과 긴밀히 협력하여 현장 여건에 맞춘 보존기술 지원과 전문인력 양성을 추진할 예정이다. 이를 통해 인류 공동의 유산인 라메세움의 지속가능한 보존·활용 기반을 마련하고, 문화유산을 매개로 한 한국와 이집트 간 우호협력 관계도 더욱 발전시켜 나갈 방침이다.
The Korea Heritage Service (Administrator Huh Min; hereinafter KHS) and its affiliated Korea National University of Heritage (President Kang Kyung-hwan; hereinafter KNUH) jointly held a completion ceremony on September 3 at 9:00 AM (local time) to mark the construction of a temporary protective shelter at the Ramesseum in Egypt. The shelter was built to facilitate the restoration of the temple’s pylon as part of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) initiative entitled, “Capacity Building for Sustainable Cultural Heritage Tourism Development in Luxor, Egypt.”
The Ramesseum, the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned c. 1279–1213 BC) of the Nineteenth Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, serves as the centerpiece of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Ancient Thebes with Its Necropolis.” However, due to long-term natural weathering, large daily temperature fluctuations, and seismic risks, enhancing structural stability and the conservation environment remains a major challenge.
As such, KHS and KNUH, together with Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities (Secretary-General Hisham El-Leithy; hereinafter SCA), have been carrying out this five-year ODA project since 2023 to systematically dismantle and restore the Ramesseum Pylon. Excavations and block surveys led to key discoveries, such as architectural blocks inscribed with Ramesses II’s cartouche and toponyms that newly indicate his territorial expansion. The temporary protective shelter was installed on site to facilitate full-scale dismantling and restoration work.
The shelter spans 42 meters wide and 26 meters long, covering a total floor area of 1,092 square meters, with each column reaching 21 meters in height. It was designed by taking into account the local climate, surrounding landscape, and site conditions. This large-scale temporary protective shelter, the first to be built in Egypt for heritage restoration, marks a significant milestone as it integrates Korea’s advanced heritage conservation technology and expertise.
The shelter completion ceremony was attended by approximately 100 distinguished guests, including Lee Kil-bai, Director General of the Heritage Policy Bureau at KHS; Hisham El-Leithy, Secretary-General of SCA; Kim Wan-joong, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Egypt; Lee Ki-sung, Head of the KNUH ODA Project Group; Lead Professor Han Wook; and key local experts and project personnel. Following the ceremony, Director General Lee had a meeting with Secretary-General El-Leithy to review and celebrate the project’s milestones together and agreed to expand Egypt-Korea cultural heritage cooperation.
Egypt is the country that inspired the creation of the World Heritage Convention, as international efforts rallied in the 1960s to save the Nubian monuments, including Abu Simbel, from being submerged by the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Notably, during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Busan last July for the first time in Korea, the Busan Declaration was adopted, highlighting “collaboration” as the key strategic value for world heritage protection.
KHS and KNUH plan to dismantling the pylon, document architectural blocks, and perform stone conservation work by 2027. In addition, the two institutions will focus on site-tailored technical conservation support and local expert cultivation, working in close cooperation with Egyptian counterparts. These efforts are expected to lay a solid foundation for the sustainable conservation and utilization of the Ramesseum, a shared heritage cherished by humanity, while further strengthening friendly relations between Egypt and Korea.
