Pastor David Jang on 2 Corinthians 3: The Letter of Christ and the Freedom of the Gospel

Following Pastor David Jang’s sermon on 2 Corinthians 3, this reflection explores the new covenant written not on tablets of stone but on human hearts, and the freedom given by the Holy Spirit. It considers the grace of the gospel that overcomes the condemnation of the law, the calling to live as letters of Christ, and the believer’s transformation from glory to glory.

In Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, what turns a man’s life around is not a cold sentence of judgment, but an unexpected act of forgiveness. The law exposed his guilt, but forgiveness called him into a life entirely different from the one he had known before.

Following 2 Corinthians 2–3, Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University in the United States, explains that while the law is like a message engraved on tablets of stone that reveals sin, the gospel is the new covenant written on human hearts by the Holy Spirit, setting people free.

At the center of this biblical reflection lies a single question: Has our faith remained merely as written words, or have we become letters of Christ that the world can read?

Where Human Letters of Recommendation End, the Letter of Christ Begins

The problem Paul faced in the Corinthian church was more than a personal misunderstanding. False teachers and legalists questioned his apostolic authority because he carried no letter of recommendation. They also accused him of placing too much emphasis on the freedom of the gospel.

Yet what Paul sought to defend was not his personal reputation, but the purity of the gospel. The real issue was whether the authority of ministry came from documents issued by people or from God’s calling and the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit.

Letters of recommendation were not meaningless in themselves. Within the communities of that time, such letters could serve as outward signs confirming the credibility of unfamiliar ministers and protecting believers from false teaching. Paul’s point, however, was that no document could replace the fruit of the gospel, nor could human approval take precedence over God’s calling. When external credentials remain but no lives have been transformed by the Spirit, those credentials cannot testify to the power of the gospel.

Instead of producing a document to prove himself, Paul pointed to the transformed lives of the Corinthian believers. His declaration, “You are a letter of Christ,” meant that a life changed by the Spirit and written upon the heart was clearer evidence than any recommendation written in ink.

Unlike an external command engraved on tablets of stone, the gospel is written on human hearts, renewing thoughts, choices, relationships, and the direction of one’s life. The believers themselves had become living documents demonstrating the truth of the gospel Paul proclaimed.

This metaphor quietly examines our faith today as well. We often try to prove our faith through experience, knowledge, titles, or outward recognition. Yet whether the gospel has truly been written on the heart is ultimately revealed through the fruit of one’s life.

When the Word deepens our love, grace transforms our relationships, and faith leads us to follow God’s calling rather than the standards of the world, we become letters that others can read.

The letter of Christ is not completed through religious language, but through a human life transformed by the Holy Spirit.

The Law Reveals Sin, but the Grace of the Gospel Opens the Way to Life

The law reveals God’s holy standard and shows humanity what has been lost. It does not conceal sin, but exposes the truth that human beings cannot attain righteousness by their own strength. Yet revealing sin and saving the sinner are not the same thing. The law may serve as a mirror that shows us the wound, but it cannot breathe life into that wound.

Pastor David Jang does not present the law and the gospel as two realities that are simply opposed to one another. The law prepares people to recognize their need for the gospel, while the gospel fulfills the saving purpose of God toward which the law was pointing.

Like the guardian described in Galatians, the law leads people to the dead end of self-righteousness, where they are compelled to seek the grace of Christ. If the law exposes human helplessness, the gospel enters precisely into that helplessness and liberates people from the power of sin and death.

Therefore, the statement “The law condemns, but the gospel sets free” does not mean that sin should be taken lightly. Rather, it declares that precisely where the seriousness of sin is most fully exposed, new life is given—not through human merit, but through the grace of God.

The gospel does not avoid the questions raised by the law. Through Christ, it opens the way to forgiveness and life. The law of the Spirit of life described in Romans leads those who were once under the law of sin and death into a new relationship with God and a new way of living.

The freedom of the gospel is not the freedom to live however we please without any standard. It is freedom from the fear of condemnation and from the exhausting compulsion to prove our own righteousness. It is the freedom to live toward God under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

A heart that once moved reluctantly under external commands begins to respond to love. Obedience that once remained a mere duty becomes the fruit of life. Instead of placing a heavier stone tablet upon us, the gospel renews the hardened heart so that we may delight in following the will of God.

The New Covenant Written on the Heart by the Spirit of Freedom

Paul calls himself and his fellow workers “ministers of a new covenant” and declares, “The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”

The new covenant is not simply a new set of regulations replacing an older one. It is the living power of God’s Spirit working within human beings, transforming those who know what is right yet remain unable to do it. For the gospel to be written on the heart means more than gaining additional knowledge. It means that the very center of one’s being is made new.

The work of the Holy Spirit does not merely impose external responsibilities. It awakens an inward desire and provides the power to obey. Obedience to God is no longer a transaction performed to earn approval, but a response to love already received.

Therefore, life under the new covenant is not a life that disregards discipline. It is a life that has come to love the will of God more deeply. It does not escape from the written command, but lives out, through the Spirit, the holiness and love to which the command was pointing.

The glory that appeared on the face of Moses was real, but temporary. By contrast, the glory of the gospel given through the Holy Spirit is not a fading radiance. It is the continuing work of transforming people into the image of God.

The change Paul describes as moving “from glory to glory” is not a momentary emotional experience, nor is it the performance of a supposedly perfected faith. It is a lifelong journey of beholding the glory of the Lord with unveiled faces while allowing our thoughts, habits, and relationships to be reshaped daily before the Holy Spirit.

The foundation of this transformation is not human qualification or willpower. Paul was convinced that his sufficiency did not come from himself, but from God.

Spiritual maturity, therefore, is not the accumulation of evidence designed to make oneself appear impressive. It is the act of opening one’s heart so that the grace of God may continually correct, renew, and guide it.

True freedom is not the state of being bound to nothing. It is the life-giving freedom to move willingly toward God through the Holy Spirit.

From Glory to Glory: A Living Gospel the World Can Read

The new covenant written on the heart does not remain confined within the heart. An identity renewed by the gospel leads to the unity and maturity of the church, and it expands into a mission that reveals God’s love and truth to the world.

Believers are called not only to believe the gospel, but also to live it. Within families, communities, workplaces, and everyday relationships, our choices translate the invisible gospel into a language that others can read.

To become a letter of Christ does not mean displaying a perfect life. Rather, it means acknowledging that our sufficiency comes from God and obeying as grace continues to transform us.

This transformation does not end in private comfort. It becomes a love that builds others up, a community shaped by grace, and responsible service in the world. The truth of the gospel is ultimately made visible through the ways people are changed and through the fruit a community bears.

Pastor David Jang explains that living as a letter of Christ is a gospel mission that extends beyond personal devotion. Inner transformation must be expressed through love that strengthens others, and the fruit borne by the church together must testify to the power of the new covenant before the world.

Grace does not stop with comfort for the individual. It moves outward into a life that proclaims the freedom and life of the gospel and reveals the kingdom of God. At that point, the believer’s life no longer serves as a letter of recommendation that exalts one’s own name. It becomes a letter communicating the love of Christ.

Ultimately, the question posed by 2 Corinthians 3 is not how many religious statements we know. It is whether the gospel written on our hearts by the Holy Spirit can be read today in our words, judgments, love, and obedience.

When we move beyond merely looking at the words engraved on stone and entrust ourselves to the grace of the gospel, even an ordinary day can become a letter sent by God into the world.

When others read our lives, will they discover the weight of condemnation, or will they encounter the gospel of Christ that gives life and sets people free?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
